East Coast Wind Storm Details
Early December brought severe weather across the United States, with strong winds, snow, and rain impacting millions. A wind advisory was issued for parts of Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, where gusts reached up to 50 mph.
A powerful Arctic cold front swept from the Great Lakes to the Northeast, bringing snow squalls with heavy snowfall and gusty winds, creating hazardous conditions like whiteouts and icy roads, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Nearly 20 million Americans faced winter weather warnings or advisories, while 60 million were under wind advisories.
AccuWeather cautioned that blinding snow squalls could disrupt travel along the I-95 corridor from Boston to Washington, D.C., though weather maps suggested the squalls might not extend that far east. The forecast also warned of mixed precipitation in major metropolitan areas.
The NWS predicted southwest winds of 20-30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, posing risks of fallen tree limbs and localized power outages. They warned, “Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few isolated power outages may result.” Drivers, particularly those in high-profile vehicles, were advised to proceed with caution.
