The National Weather Service based in Moon confirmed Sunday that a tornado had originated from a storm in Washington County. This particular tornado, designated as an EF-1, exhibited maximum wind speeds of 105 mph. Its touchdown occurred south of the city of Washington, within South Franklin Township. Visual evidence provided by the Prosperity Fire Department in Washington County, captured in video footage, showcased a clearly discernible funnel in contact with the ground.
Further validation of a tornado's occurrence emerged from the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh. According to their storm survey, a tornado descended upon South Franklin Township in Washington County on Saturday. This event was classified as an EF-1 tornado, with estimated wind speeds hovering around 105 miles per hour.
Remarkably, this marks the 16th documented tornado to impact Washington County since 1950. The most recent instance of a tornado in the area transpired on August 1, 2022, when an EF-2 tornado traversed into Washington County from the northern West Virginia panhandle, as reported by the National Weather Service.
