2024-07-15 - Upper New York Storm Details
A series of powerful thunderstorms struck the Finger Lakes region on July 15th, 2024, causing a tornado in Ontario County. This came just a week after seven other tornadoes hit the state. The tornado on Tuesday afternoon was rated EF-2, with winds reaching 135 mph and traveled over 5 miles.
The storms knocked out power for thousands, flooded streets, and damaged cars and homes. In Farmington, NY, hail the size of baseballs broke windows, dented cars, and damaged house siding.
In Rome, a city of 31,000, the storms demolished homes and uprooted trees. The tornado tore off roofs, collapsed walls, and damaged vehicles. It traveled northeast through the city, causing extensive damage.
The most affected upper New York counties were Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Cortland, Erie, Genesee,Livingston, Monroe, Onondaga, Oneida (especially the city of Rome), Ontario (especially the city of Victor and Farmington), Senaca, Steuben, Wayne, Westchester, and Wyoming.
